John Updike

Did anyone note John Updike's recent death? I've read a smattering of his work including Rabit Redux...

  1. Never actually read any of Updike's work but I did read about his death. I always tend to take notice when a well known writer dies. Kurt Vonnegut's death is actually the reason I began reading his (genius) work. I have to check out Updike.

  2. On a news quiz in my journalism class the question was who was John Updike and what did he do? I got the name right but I said he was a news writer :( I'll have to check him out soon

  3. I never really follow any contemporary poets, but I did hear of John Updike's passing. Most of the poets I'm familiar with have been gone for years; i.e. Poe. I get so caught up in school and work that I rarely get a chance to sit back, relax and enjoy myself. Hopefully soon, but I'm quite doubtful.

  4. Yea i read about that too.
I always felt like he was an under appreciated writer, famous but I never discussed any of his work in any classes. I read that some of his work can be really controversial, i wonder if that's why I've never been introduced to his work.

  5. It's interesting to hear that you all didn't study Updike in high school. He's one of those famous writers, who, I think, went marginally (although not totally) "out of style" probably in the last 10 years or so. He was still being taught 20 years ago when I was an undergrad. He was mostly a fiction writer (not a poet).
